Why does Red River use beef tallow?

Beef tallow has been used in traditional soapmaking for generations. It's naturally rich in fatty acids including oleic, palmitic and stearic acids. Several of those fatty acids are also naturally present among the lipids on human skin. For us, though, the practical reason matters most: tallow's fatty-acid profile helps us make a hard, long-lasting bar with rich lather and a clean rinse. That's why beef tallow makes up 90% of our formula.

How is traditional soap different from body wash?

Traditional soap is made by reacting fats or oils with alkali. FDA notes that many modern body cleansers, including some solid bars, are synthetic-detergent products rather than traditional soap. Red River soaps are made from saponified beef tallow and castor oil.

What ingredients are in Red River tallow soap?

Our scented soaps contain saponified beef tallow, saponified castor oil, and fragrance. Original contains only saponified beef tallow and saponified castor oil, with no added fragrance.

Will tallow soap make my skin feel greasy?

No. Properly made tallow soap rinses clean with water. Red River bars are formulated to produce a rich, creamy lather without leaving an oily coating behind.

How long does a tallow soap bar last?

How long a bar lasts depends on how often you use it and how well it dries between uses. Red River bars are made to be hard and long-lasting. Keep the bar on a well-draining soap dish and allow it to dry between uses to help it last longer.

Are Red River soaps handmade?

Yes. Every batch is handmade in small batches and cured for several weeks before being offered for sale.
